Link of the Day: The Liberal gun registry platform
You may have seen little banners and buttons all over the web recently, urging you to help save lives by saving the gun registry. If you click one of the more prominent images out there, it’ll take you to this page, which is an archive of Liberal Party material related to the issue.
I’m going to be talking at length about the gun registry over the next little while. That’s the plan, at least. This is a really important program that saves a huge number of lives across the country, and it’s in jeopardy. Not only that, but much of the debate over its future isn’t exactly happening on the level, much less out in the open. You may hear a lot about the issue over the course of the next few weeks, but we’re all going to have to stay on top of it if we want to get to the heart of the matter.
The Liberals are leading the political charge in the registry’s favour; in their own words, they’re “working to save the gun registry alongside many groups and individuals who have been at the forefront of the fight for effective gun control, such as the Canadian Police Association, the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians, l’Association des étudiants de Polytechnique, Coalition for Gun Control and people like you!”
This is the kind of unified work that’s needed to save the registry, but the campaign still needs a lot more support. I’ll be the first to admit that my own party has been divided and somewhat silent on the issue, which is disappointing because their support is desperately needed in Parliament.
If you want to learn more about this issue, then this archive’s a good place to start; it’s even got a feed for those who want to be kept up to date on new posts and developments.
Not only that, but in case you skipped it, the first link in this post will take you to a really thorough timeline on the issue, courtesy of the CBC. Do check it out if you feel like getting down to the nuts and bolts of it all.
