Carol Hughes is the fifth NDP MP to switch sides on the gun registry vote

It’s being reported this afternoon that NDP MP Carol Hughes has become the fifth of the twelve NDP MPs who previously voted to scrap the long gun registry to reverse her decision and announce that she’ll vote against the bill next week.

“The Conservatives have used this as a political tool for years,” Hughes noted in a statement. “So have the Liberals, as a matter of fact. None of them have looked at how we can actually fix it. That’s something when I first started out and started meeting with groups we discussed: is there a way to fix this?”

The story cited above also notes that public support for the registry is on the rise. In a Canadian Press Harris-Decima poll conducted at the end of August, 48% of respondents said that it would be a bad idea to get rid of the registry, compared to 42% in April. Just 38% felt the registry should be scrapped, compared to the 45% who said the same thing in April’s poll.
