It’s not immediately clear how the registry prevents suicides, though. In fact, a common argument for the registry is it deters gun owners from irresponsible acts or illegal resale, and encourages them to be legal and safe with any weapon registered to them. A suicidal person is unlikely to share these motivations. The only rationale I can think of is to assist in locating a hidden gun in the possession of someone who is a perceived danger to themselves, but that will not always be known. If it was, the person’s licence to possess a weapon would already be revoked.
