The budget’s been rejected, and an election’s likely to follow

Following yesterday’s rejection of the budget presented to the House, Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff has announced that he will table a motion against the government later today. A vote on the motion will follow on Friday, with the NDP and the Bloc pledging to support it.

“This is a government that’s lost the confidence of the House of Commons,” Ignatieff said, “a government that’s lost the confidence of Canadians.” He added that the budget doesn’t include “what there should be for families,” such as affordable child care and post-secondary education.

“What [Canadians] got,” NDP leader Jack Layton said in a statement, “was just more proof that Ottawa is broken and more evidence Stephen Harper can’t be trusted.”

Harper, for his part, scolded the opposition parties for forcing an “unnecessary” election and suggested they “didn’t take the time to read the budget before they decided” to reject it – which is exactly the sort of divisive, disingenuous, condescending, totally unsubstantiated bullshit we hopefully won’t have to tolerate for much longer.
