The “two weeks of content” rule

I’m one of those suckers who keeps thinking he’s got a good idea for a blog. Week after week, a new idea hits me. “Forget writing a single-serving take on this issue on one of many my existing outlets!” I think. “I need to create a whole new platform for this unproven idea!”

I’ve gotten better at this, if only as part of my ongoing quest to rein myself in. If nothing else, as in the case of @nomoregundeaths, I’ve acknowledged that Twitter is sometimes a better medium for these pursuits. But there are still a few nagging ideas that feel worthy of their own blog.

With that in mind, I’m instituting a “two weeks of content” rule. I’ve currently got two ideas for great new blogs, and if it were up to my raging ego, I’d launch them both right now. Instead, I’m keeping them both on the shelf until I’ve written two weeks of blog posts for either one of them.

If you’ve ever had a blog of your own, then you know that one of the biggest challenges involved in running a blog is keeping up with your own schedule. As soon as you fall behind that schedule, your motivation plummets. The idea behind the “two weeks of content” rule is to give myself a buffer, ensuring that I’ll never fall behind a reasonable posting schedule. And if I do, then maybe I don’t really care about the subject matter as much as I thought I did.

How have you tackled the challenges of a new blog? Have you ever tried a similar approach? Do let me know what you think in the comments; I can use all the help I can get!
