Thank you, God bless you, and Kanye West is a jackass
I didn’t believe this when I first heard it, but the sources look pretty reliable, so I’m going to run with it. Apparently President Obama himself, while speaking off the record to journalist Terry Moran, called Kanye West a “jackass” in response to his behaviour at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Obama made the remark yesterday during an off-the-record portion of an interview with CNBC, for which ABC News reporter Moran was present. “Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a ‘jackass’ for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won,” Moran tweeted. “Now THAT’S presidential.” Although the post was deleted immediately, it can still be found here at the time of this writing.
ABC has issued an apology for Moran’s breach of journalistic ethics, and Kanye’s apparently been trying to do some all caps damage control of his own. But as far as I’m aware, there hasn’t yet been a statement from the White House.
And really, why should there be? After all, Kanye West is a jackass. He’s also one of the most hated entertainers in the world right now, so I doubt anybody’s going to criticize Obama for such a remark – although I’d like to see the people at Fox News take Kanye’s side, especially after the whole “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” thing.
Indeed, Obama’s approval rating might even take a bit of a jump in the end. The first person to comment on the Huffington Post story cited above, for example, said that “This is exactly the kind of human, non-Spock-like outburst Obama needs to do much more of to better connect with the vast majority of the American people.”
Come to think of it, from a certain perspective, Joe Wilson did pretty much the same thing to Obama last week. Now, I’m not saying Obama should have called him a jackass. But I think if something like that had slipped out, a lot of people would have understood.
