Corduroy skirts are a sin

BoingBoing recently brought us a story about an “angry loser” named Michelle Deferio who took a placard reading “Homosexuality is sin, Christ can set you free!” down to Syracuse University, only to be brought to mob justice by a single gay student.

“I decided that because this woman thought it was okay to make me feel uncomfortable in my home,” Chris Pesto explained in a Facebook note, “I would retaliate and make her feel just as uncomfortable, if not more. This woman was wearing a ankle-length corduroy skirt, which, as we all know, is a fashion nono. So, in order to make her feel uncomfortable, I stood next to her and held a sign that said Corduroy skirts are a sin!”

The response was unexpected, to say the least. “I don’t think I have ever drawn so much attention in my life,” Pesto said. “SO many people asked to take a picture with me, I got laughs, high fives and there were the few that even cursed off the woman standing behind me. Before I knew it I had 100+ people holding signs for gay rights asking people to honk their horns to support. I was interviewed by a news station, and more than 5 student organization papers, and the post standard of syracuse.”

According to BoingBoing’s source, Michelle and her father Jim, who joined her in protest, are members of a group called Open-Air Campaigners. Their website explains that they are dedicated to “preaching the Gospel to lost people and mobilizing the body of Christ, primarily through effective open-air outreach.” But I guess “effective” is a judgment call, because their message was so poorly and laughably received by the student body that the administration has reportedly banned them from the campus.

So good for Chris Pesto. He countered a message of hate with humour, he got the people behind him, and he drove the haters out. We could all due well to follow his impromptu but thoroughly effective example.
