Getting things done in 2010

David Allen, creator of the Getting Things Done system, recently sent his mailing list a series of questions about the past year and the year ahead. Some of them are a little hokey, but on the whole they’re fairly useful. I thought I’d post the 2010 questions here with my answers, since lists like this are all the rage on blogs at this time of year.

Q: What would you like to be your biggest triumph in 2010?

A: I’m getting married and buying a home this year. Let’s call it a tie between those two, although I would like to get a few new projects off the ground.

Q: What advice would you like to give yourself in 2010?

A: Delegate more, relax more, work better.

Q: What is the major effort you are planning to improve your financial results in 2010?

A: Going back to working full time would be a great start.

Q: What would you be most happy about completing in 2010?

A: Again, it’s a tie between the move and the wedding. It’s going to be a big year.

Q: What major indulgence are you willing to experience in 2010?

A: The way this question is phrased, it sounds like it should be about something fattening. In my case, I think it’ll be the honeymoon. That’ll be a block of time away in which work is forbidden and there’s nothing to do but enjoy ourselves.

Q: What would you most like to change about yourself in 2010?

A: Hmmm… Eat better, sleep more, exercise more, drink less, keep my foot out of my mouth. All the usual stuff.

Q: What are you looking forward to learning in 2010?

A: I’ve got a lot of skills I’d like to develop this year. I don’t want to do more gigging, writing and working as much as I’d like to do it all better, and that’s a matter of learning new approaches and habits.

Q: What do you think your biggest risk will be in 2010?

A: Keeping my head together while tackling all the things I want to do without getting overworked and stressed out. Again, it’s a matter of adapting to new routines.

Q: What about your work are you most committed to changing and improving in 2010?

A: The year ahead is a big one for my organization, and there are a lot of opportunities to push our entire field forward. I don’t often talk about work on this site, and frankly, the details aren’t very exciting. But there are a number of new projects at the office that I’m really looking forward to tackling.

Q: What is one as yet undeveloped talent you are willing to explore in 2010?

A: There’s a lot I have yet to learn about DJing and audio production, and there’s no time like the present to do so.

Q: What brings you the most joy and how are you going to do or have more of that in 2010?

A: Working on something I believe in, without working too hard or too aimlessly. Doing better means doing it smarter.

Q: Who or what, other than yourself, are you most committed to loving and serving in 2010?

A: I probably shouldn’t answer this question. I’ve already mentioned the wedding enough in this post.

Q: What one word would you like to have as your theme in 2010?

A: “Fantastamazing.”
