Forty bucks, five gallons
I really wish I’d watched Jarhead before I’d gotten to know John Krasinski as a television actor. I’ve talked about the book on this blog before, and although I’m usually one of those guys who likes to put the movie off until he’s read the source material, I’d totally recommend that you read the book and watch the film before you catch even one more episode of The Office. In fact, if you fully want to enjoy them both, then I wouldn’t even read the rest of this post until you’ve at least seen the film.
Admittedly, John Krasinski’s role in Jarhead is a cameo at best. It was such a small role, in fact, that according to IMDb, he was able to write his own dialogue. But even during his brief cameo, he’s able to completely disrupt the gravity of the film through no fault of his own.
If you’ve seen it, then you know what I’m talking about. I don’t necessarily want to call him the victim of typecasting, but he’s definitely sitting at a desk, working at a keyboard, and acting all bored and bummed out. How are we supposed to look at that post-Office and not assume we’re looking at Jim Halpert in the Marine Corps?
Listen, I’ve been putting off watching Gomorra until I get around to finishing the book. Should I just plow through them both as soon as possible? Jenna Fischer isn’t in the film version, is she?
