Currently enjoying “Baby I’m Yours” by Breakbot
You know, as much as I like reviewing records that came out twelve years ago, I’d hate to neglect all of the great new stuff coming out right now. Parisien producer Breakbot, for example, just put out a new EP called Baby I’m Yours, and it’s one of the catchiest new releases I’ve heard in months.
It’s not so much an EP as a single, and it’s well suited to DJs and listeners alike. The title track, featuring terrifically soulful vocals by Irfane, is chock full of hooks and romance, funky on the one hand and tender on the other. Remixes by Siriusmo and Cassius offshoot LaFunkMob practically start again from scratch, dropping the vocal line on new chord structures and putting forth completely different takes on the material. Instrumental edits of all three versions are also contained on the disc, and the B-side “Make You Mine” is a delightfully mellow counterpoint that draws from just about everything good about soul from the seventies onward.
In short, it’s a great EP showcasing a hell of a tune, and I hope it gets the same amount of attention over here that it’s bound to get over there. It’s another welcome example of just how soulful and human electronic music can be. Put this one in your headphones and you’ll be smiling at young couples and helping old ladies across the road in no time.
