Link of the Day: Bo Burnham

The other night, we saw this fellow open for Tim Minchin at a Just for Laughs Festival show at Second City. It was one of the more inventive, literate, and purely vulgar shows I’d seen in a long time. Burnham combines musical comedy, observational humour, spoken word and improvisation in frantic and unpredictable ways, drawing the best elements of each of them together in a performance that’s at once confrontation and completely self-deprecating.

And he’s nineteen! Can you believe it? What an asshole, this kid! Although he humbly shrugs off the “young comedian” label – “I prefer ‘prodigy,’” he told his audience – there’s no denying that he’s funnier and more accomplished at nineteen than… Well, than I am at thirty, for example.

By the way, we also caught Noel Fielding last night at Comedy Bar. Front row and everything, which was pretty amazing! I’ll tell you more about that later, but a friend of mine who’s checking out his show tonight asked to write something about it here beforehand. So just in case I don’t get the chance to get into detail about it later today, the Noel Fielding show was excellent.
