Currently enjoying “Latin” by Holy Fuck
I picked up the third and latest from Holy Fuck last week, and I had it in my headphones yesterday as I cleaned out my garage. If I were a better music critic, I’m sure I could spin a great yarn about the aesthetic serendipity of listening to a band that makes ostensibly electronic music with instruments and non-instruments alike as I sorted through a great pile of random objects and junk. But really, why should I do you and this album alike a disservice just to serve my own ego?
The bottom line is that Latin is a mighty fine album, and the impressive chart positions that it’s achieved in the notoriously tough to crack American market are well deserved indeed. The most negative thing I can say about this disc is that Holy Fuck’s attempt to fake the business of loops and automation isn’t fooling anyone; there’s a lot of soul and a real human feeling on this record, and you’d better not listen to it in your driveway if you don’t want your neighbours to catch you dancing around like an idiot.
