Well done, Glenn Thibeault!
Today it was announced that NDP MP Glenn Thibeault, who is one of the twelve MPs in the party’s ranks who voted to scrap the gun registry during the bill’s second reading back in November, will switch his vote and oppose the Conservatives during the final vote later this month.
“The Long Gun Registry is a valuable tool to keep Sudburians and our police officers safe,” Chief Frank Elsner is quoted as saying in an NDP news release. “I commend Glenn in looking past the politics and trying to find a practical solution that preserves the registry while addressing the real concerns of gun owners.”
The news comes just days after a similar announcement on the part of MP Charlie Angus, who declared last week that he will vote against the bill because he can no longer align himself with the Conservatives in light of their tactics and false assertions.
“If the Conservatives,” Angus explained, “say that the police are a malevolent force and they expect me to base public policy based on lies or suppression of evidence; I cannot support a bill if it does not have evidence behind it.”
More to come on these developments later tonight. Stay tuned to the news in the days ahead, and do feel free to encourage the remaining ten NDP MPs to follow the example set by Angus and Thibeault.
