One not-Ford drops out as another not-Ford takes the lead!

Look, I know I promised that I wasn’t going to post anything during my honeymoon. But in my defense, it was my wife who pointed out that Rocco Rossi has officially withdrawn from the mayoral race.

And to hear that his announcement followed the release of an Ipsos Reid poll that showed that Smitherman has the support of 31% of voters? Compared to the 30% of voters who say they’re backing Ford? Well, how could I not take a moment to celebrate that? I mean, I know it’s not much, but it’s a start.

Hear me, Toronto, and hear me well: I will gladly be forever in your debt if you can keep this up and somehow solve this Ford problem while Kate and I are in Vancouver. I know it’s going to take a lot of work, and I’ll be glad to do my limited part when I get back. But anything you could do to broaden that gap in the meantime would be great.

If you’re a journalist or a news editor, for example, then you could really do me a solid by giving the other candidates anywhere close to the level of coverage that you’ve all been giving Ford. I know I’m not alone in thinking that a small but substantial portion of the people who keep saying they’re voting for Ford are only doing so because he’s the only candidate they can name.

Let’s make this happen, Toronto! It’s bad enough to live in a country run by a man who isn’t worthy of his office. I don’t want to feel the same way about my city, too – and I know I’m not the only one.
