Link of the Day: Mayor Miller’s Twitter account

If you’re from Toronto, and you’re already on Twitter, then you probably already know that our mayor has his own account. It’s well worth following, and not just for “mayor stuff” – Miller frequently comments on global issues and community happenings, and he certainly does so from a unique perspective.

Although Miller’s term will end on Wednesday, 1 December 2010, when the newly-elected Rob Ford takes over, he’ll likely hold on to the account. I remember asking once, on Twitter, what new user name Miller would adopt after his term ended. Miller himself replied, saying that he didn’t see any reason why he couldn’t keep his current name.

To be honest, I’ve always worried that he interpreted my question the wrong way, getting the impression that I was looking forward to the end of his term. For the record, I wasn’t, and now more than ever, I’m not. Still, I went on to worry that I’d accidentally rubbed the mayor the wrong way. Sadly, when you’ve only got a hundred and forty characters, you’re bound to leave yourself open to interpretation.

Anyway, like many of us, I took the time yesterday to thank Miller for his service. He’s done an awful lot for this city, and he’s done it with great spirit, pride and excitement. Here’s hoping, perhaps against hope, that our new mayor and city council will build upon his fine work.

By the way, here’s the statement Miller issued after Ford’s victory last night, courtesy of the Toronto Sun – whose decision to call their election coverage “Change T.O.” arguably reflects an obvious and predictable bias towards Ford, but that’s neither here nor there.
