Clear proof that I’m far too immature to be considered a worthwhile source of commentary on Rob Ford

Jocelyn Geddie, a very funny woman that my brother can proudly call his girlfriend, set a fun mock-debate in motion on Facebook this afternoon after I pointed out that a lot of elected officials “wait until at least their second day in office to violate their own campaign promises.”

Granted, this was a matter of opinion. Nobody could ever credibly mistake Rob Ford for a fan of the Transit City proposal, so it’s hardly hypocritical of him to have come out swinging against it. I may disagree with Ford’s position, but that doesn’t give me the right to call him a hypocrite.

You know what I think does? All these pledges to expand the subway system, after running a campaign built on promises of curbing reckless and ineffective spending. Given what we know about public transit in this city, don’t those two positions openly contradict each other?

“Look,” I told Jocelyn, waiving any right to be taken seriously in matters of civic debate during Ford’s term in office, “nobody’s first day on the job is easy, even if they’ve worked in the building where that job takes place for years.

“I just think that if you’re going to try and determine how the people you serve are going to get around town for the next four years or so,” I explained, “then you should at least wait until your ability to get out of your own office is beyond question.”

I think I wrote my response rather poorly (in the post-caffeine haze that represents most, if not all, of my afternoons), but I meant to agree with you 100%, and hope that came across. It was only a matter of time until Ford started acting in a manner that wildly contradicted everything he promised he’d do— and why put off being a hypocrite when you can start on your very first day in office?

It was a hundred percent clear, Jocelyn, and hilarious to boot. I didn’t link to the comment thread in question because I didn’t know how you’d feel about it – and because my profile’s semi-private anyway. I admittedly gave you a bit of the short end of the stick as a result.

It looks like they’re not getting rid of the gravy train, they’re just moving it underground.

I can’t possibly be the first to say it, but I don’t understand why we haven’t been flooded with “Crazy Train” parodies. Ozzy rules!

Holy shit, you guys, “Iron Man” literally came on right after I posted that!
