Rest in Peace, Sergeant Ryan Russell

As you’ve likely heard by now, a Toronto Police sergeant named Ryan Russell died in hospital this morning after being struck by a stolen truck in the line of duty. He leaves behind a wife and a young child. The CBC has the story.

Sergeant Russell is the fortieth officer in the history of the service to lose his life in the line of duty; the thirty-ninth was Constable Laura Ellis, who became the first woman to die in service in February of 2002.

The fact that such a horrible thing happens so rarely in Toronto is a testament to our city and the people who work to keep it safe – not just within the service, of course, but within the community at large. But the fact that it happens at all is no easier to bear, particularly for the family left behind and the families of others in the service. Please keep the Russells in your thoughts.
