Meet junior Conservative staffer Tony Phillips (while you still can)

There’s a certain sad irony to a paid Conservative staffer taking to his Facebook page to condemn the “stupidity” of his own party’s communications staff. But that’s exactly what a junior staffer named Tony Phillips did last week, according to the National Post.

“Can someone in the [campaign war room] please save the PM’s image by allowing him to answer more than five questions a day?!?” Phillips asked in a post on his wall. “When Sun Media starts to attack our AMAZING government, you know stupidity has prevailed amongst communications people.”

You’ve got to admit, he’s got a point. Maybe not so much about the quality of his government – depending on how positively you choose to define “AMAZING” – but certainly about Harper and the negative impact his typically bullheaded approach seems to be having on his campaign.

Even those of us who don’t plan to vote for Harper, let alone work for him, can agree that voters of all stripes deserve better from a democratic contender. And yes, if things have gotten so bad that even the folks at the Sun feel compelled to do their jobs, then it’s time to turn it around.

In that respect, you’ve got to hand it to Tony Phillips for speaking out. You’ve also got to hope the way in which he chose to do so doesn’t mean he’ll be out of a job by the end of the week, but that’s beside the point.
