She’s watching my language

My daughter can barely speak, but it’s becoming clear that she understands at least some of what we’re saying. My wife spent some time this morning asking her to point to various people and things in the room, and just about every time, she got it right.

Moments like these are as surprising as they are heartwarming. Since she can’t communicate with words, it’s tough to know what’s going on in my daughter’s brain – and since children develop so fast, it’s easy to underestimate them. When you see something like this happen, it makes you realize just how well she’s coming along.

It also makes you realize it’s probably time to stop swearing around her. Even confining it to print for now would be a big step, and it would give me at least a couple of years to try and phase it out completely. If only I’d thought of this yesterday, I could have tried giving it up for Lent.
