I finally caved and got a damned iPhone
Today on my lunch hour, I went down to the local Telus kiosk and hooked myself up with a new iPhone. It’s the first new phone I’ve bought in about five years, and it’s a serious understatement to say that phones have gotten a little more advanced in that time.
There’s a bit of a learning curve involved, and a lot more available in terms of features and apps that I’m ever likely to use. But like any other tool, I think it could be really beneficial once I’ve figured out how to make effective use of it. If carrying an iPhone around means I don’t have to carry a laptop, an iPod, a pad of paper and a phone, then that’s a good investment. And if I’m also saving money in the long run, and generating less waste, then so much the better.
I have to admit that I was impressed by the sheer number of things Kate was able to do with her new iPhone during our stay in Vancouver. Oh, the maps and social media sites and various other gizmos! Wherever we went, the best of the city was available to us instantly.
That’s a special case, of course, and I’m much more likely to put this phone to some pretty everyday use. If it helps me keep up with the news and my GTD routine, then that’ll be more than enough – and I’m certainly open to any apps and utilities that any of you might want to recommend.
In the meantime, I’m having a lot of fun walking around downtown wearing headphones and gawking at a tiny screen. I really think it’s going to revolutionize the way I get hit by cars.
