Currently enjoying “All Day” by Girl Talk

Yesterday, from out of the blue, Girl Talk released a new album called All Day as a free download. It wasn’t an easy album to grab, because the official website was quickly overloaded with traffic. I had better luck with a mirror site that was soon posted by a fellow on Twitter, and hopefully you will too.

It’s no surprise that Girl Talk’s fifth album, like his others, has gotten the web talking. What’s refreshing is that more than ever, people seem to be talking about the music itself, as opposed to the potential ramifications of it.

And sure, if we felt like it, we could have another round of boring, academic conversations about the man and his music and “what it all means,” or whatever. Is he a genius? Is he this generation’s Jive Bunny? Maybe something in between the two? Who knows, and frankly, who cares?

At the end of the day, All Day is a decent record. It’s a good example of Girl Talk doing what he does best, and it definitely puts him on par with the leading mash-up DJs of the day. In fact, as near as I can tell, the only creative difference between Girl Talk and someone like Z-Trip, for example, is that he gives his tracks new names and calls the whole thing an album instead of a DJ set. Isn’t all the “future of music” squabbling surrounding Girl Talk just the result of that little distinction?

Whatever name you want to give to what Girl Talk does, it’s got to be said that he does it very well indeed. We can talk about the bigger picture all we want, but in the end, the music speaks for itself.
