My wife sent a letter to Tony Clement about the CRTC bandwidth ruling

“Dear Minister,” Kate wrote earlier today.

“I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for the review of the CRTC ruling on bandwidth caps. I think the CRTC decision takes Canada in a very dangerous, and anti-competitive direction, so I was very happy to hear you had called for a review, and reiterated your commitment to competition, innovation and choice.

“Usage-based billing is terrible for small businesses and entrepreneurs,” she noted, “as well as any company where employees work from home, and charge their internet usage to their employer.

“If this decision are allowed to stand, Canada will suffer economically. The prices that companies are planning to charge for extra usage would make it cheaper to send hard drives and zip drives by mail than to download. Canada would quickly become a laughing stock, and a day late in all business transactions. It will restrict innovation, profit and growth in Canadian business. Many start-ups are relying on increased internet usage by their consumers in their business models, which this decision will stop in its tracks.

“Please, do not let this happen. Our country and our small businesses have to be competitive in a global market. As we move into the future, internet usage will become more critical to all aspects of our economy. Limiting the internet usage of Canadians will have long-lasting and far reaching effects on the Canadian economy.”
