I’m on vacation (so I can work)

Every once in a while I manage to overextend myself, and the past month or so has been a fine example. Between the conference and the move, the new gig at Chart, and a bunch of other stuff that I’ve allowed to compete for my attention, I’ve been burning the candle at both ends in a big way. So when I went into work yesterday morning, and my boss told me I’ve got almost four weeks of vacation time that I need to use or lose between now and January, I decided to take a day and a half off.

Which isn’t to say that I’ll be sitting on my ass for the next few days. I’m hosting Strong Words tonight – our sixtieth reading and our last before we celebrate our fifth anniversary in June, if you can believe it – and there’s another edition of Everyone’s a DJ on Saturday that I’ve done a pretty lacklustre job of booking and promotion so far. I’ve also got two phone interviews tomorrow, and a bunch of painting and unpacking left to do. Kate’s in the UK at the moment for sad and sudden reasons, and the more of a finished house she can come home to, the better.

I’m not saying all of this because I want to create the impression that I’m a busy and important fellow; if anything, I’m actually just an overexcited keener who continuously bites off more than he can chew. But I know when I’m beat, and I know when it’s time to reevaluate my priorities, or at least put a few things on hold.

To an extent, as you may have heard, I’m already working on this. For example, I’m working on moving into the background on Everyone’s a DJ and Strong Words alike; they’re both great events that can not only function fine without me at the helm, but which can also actually benefit from somebody else’s ideas and energy.

A month ago, I said that Righteous Melody would be back in a week, and I’m becoming more of a liar with each passing day. I’ll post some new material as soon as I’m able – but beyond that, this site and the Chart stuff, that’s going to be it for the writing for now. All of the other projects on my “to do” list – and there’s some really cool stuff in the queue, if you don’t mind me saying so – are going to have to wait.

Hell, there’s even some stuff in progress that I’m basically going to have to abandon until the summer. Don’t ask me about Babylon Telecom for a while, for example, unless you want to hear me make a bunch of lame excuses about a project that was never even all that popular to begin with.

I did put out the call a while back to anyone who felt like getting on board with any and all of these things, and I’m glad to say the response has been good. My follow-up hasn’t been nearly as impressive, but I’ll be getting in touch with everyone who was kind enough to drop a line in due time.
