Ten years ago this week, Bush officially defeated Gore

As the folks at Crooks and Liars recently noted, Monday marked the tenth anniversary of the day that Bush officially defeated Gore in the 2000 presidential election. It was the closest election of its kind in over a century, and it was only the fourth in which the electoral vote contradicted the popular vote.

“Hotly contested, even to this day, the election was finally decided by the Supreme Court, who overruled a lower court’s decision to recount ballots in Florida.”

Interesting, attorneys Ted Olson and David Boies, who represented Bush and Gore respectively in the 2000 Supreme Court case, are currently working together to uphold the recent ruling in Perry v. Schwarzenegger, the federal lawsuit that successfully challenged the constitutional validity of California’s Proposition 8. The ruling is currently under appeal.
