It’s Friday, so here’s the video for “Shine” by Doughboys

If you’re not in your late twenties at least, and you didn’t grow up in Canada, there’s a really good chance you’ve never seen this video. Hell, it’s possible you’ve never even heard of Doughboys, and no one could blame you if you hadn’t. What do you say we make up for it?

The version of the video that I’ve linked to here is a pretty poor dub from an old VHS tape, and for that I’m sorry. On the other hand, I’m not sorry, because I can’t think of a more appropriate way to share a video like this. Who among us doesn’t have a box full of tapes in our mother’s basement, crammed full of great videos just like this one?

Maybe we should all get together and bring those boxes down to the CRTC the next time they decide to tell a Canadian music channel that they’re not allowed to air more music videos because it would make them “directly competitive” with a laughably ironically named channel that long ago abandoned any pretense of supporting Canadian music. It would be a nice Miracle on 34th Street kind of way to illustrate the value of doing that sort of thing.
