Any idiot can work hard

There’s a lot more to getting things done and feeling accomplished than just keeping busy. Anyone can keep themselves busy, or be kept busy by someone else. But that’s not the same as getting things accomplished, and it doesn’t always leave you feeling like you used your time well.

Last week was a very busy week for me, and I do feel like I got a lot done. But I also feel like I let a lot of other things slide, and it’s not really fair to say it was out of necessity.

Now, if I’d been lazy, that would be one thing. I could simply say “Fine, I’ll work harder this week,” and that would be it. But if you’re like me – and I’m sure a lot of you are – then you already work hard. Hard enough, at least, to know that “working hard” isn’t what it’s all about.

I’m going to try and work smarter this week. I’m going to try and work with more of a sense of balance in mind. I hope you’ll join me, and I hope you’ll share your thoughts on how you plan to do it in the comments. If all goes well, we can meet here again next week, pat each other on the back, and ask ourselves how we can do an even better job in the week to come.
