My brother and his friends have “suffered” the “wrath” of the Westboro Baptist Church

“Pretty sure [the] Westboro Baptist Church is protesting a play I cowrote down in Kansas,” my brother announced in a tweet on Saturday night.

Sure enough, just a few minutes later, my brother tweeted a photo of the WBC in action outside of the Topeka Performing Arts Centre, where Spank! played on Thursday as part of its current tour. Topeka is the WBC’s hometown and base of (ahem) operations, so I’m guessing they figured a night at the local theatre might be a welcome break from protesting military funerals.

“Well,” friend and co-writer Ian MacIntyre said in a tweet of his own, “I can finally cross ‘Have a show I co-wrote picketed by the Westboro Baptist Church’ off my bucket list.”

And that’s really the right way to look at it, don’t you think? Sure, the Westboro Baptist Church is a hate group, but it’s also one of the dumbest and most ridiculous hate groups around. Their every move is a punchline, and if you ever find yourself in their cross-hairs, I’m sure you can expect nothing but free publicity and the good will of the general public.

Congratulations, in other words, to the writers, cast and crew of Spank! for achieving such a wonderfully silly milestone. Does this mean you can tell everybody that God hates your show?
