“The real press will eat [Arnold Schwarzenegger] alive”
There’s an interesting article on Google Books about Arnold Schwarzenegger, his press machine and his personal history. It appeared in the March 1992 issue of Spy Magazine, and it’s a hell of a look not only at Schwarzenegger’s troubling past and personality, but also at the powerful PR team and complacent entertainment press that kept it under wraps for so many years.
After nearly two decades, however, there was one particular passage that jumped out at me:
“If Arnold really believes it is his right to do whatever stories he wants to do, though, he is in for a rude shock. In the race for the governorship or a Senate seat, ‘the real press will eat him alive,’ as one magazine editor says.
“A longtime associate of Arnold’s agrees. ‘[Running for office] isn’t like doing a PR campaign for some movie. If there is anything at all unpleasant in his background, [the press] will go after it like animals.”
Yeah, um… That didn’t really end up happening, did it?

spy magazine is awesome. do you think that surviving a sex scandal is based solely on the politician’s ability to shrug convincingly? I do.
