Thirty-nine Democrats

I haven’t had much of a chance to read up on the recent health care vote, and I know I’ve got my work cut out for me. One thing I have checked out, however, is a chart that the New York Times published on Sunday, which identifies and contextualizes the thirty-nine Democrats who voted against the bill. Thanks to Rachel Maddow for the link.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t know who most of these people are. But I was intrigued to see Dennis Kucinich on the list. Knowing what little I know about him, I would have thought he’d be into this sort of thing. When he campaigned in 2008, he called for a universal health care system. So the fact that he voted against this bill makes me wonder what his reservations were.

    It sounds like it was a shitty half-assed bill. I’m betting some people didn’t vote for it because they knew it would still pass. In the US they don’t seem to have whips the same way they do here and in the UK. Also, i’m betting some democrats are just crazy and don’t want healthcare at all, because that would be like Soviet Russia.
