Wondering what the new year will bring

Last night’s edition of Strong Words was one of the best readings we’ve done all year. Bruce Hunter was great, Ramabai Espinet was great, and Terry Watada was great. It was very much the sort of compelling and eclectic reading that we try to do each month, and it has to be said that Spencer and Devon did a terrific job booking it.

Sadly, they won’t be doing that job for much longer. As we announced last night, both of them are moving on from their roles as curators in the new year. They’re both busy guys in their own right, and each one felt it was time to focus on some other projects. They won’t be easy to replace, but together we’re looking at some very promising leads, and I hope it won’t be long before I’ll get to introduce you to the new crew.

Not only that, but we’ve also got to find a new home for the new year. We’ve been at the Art Bar since 2005, and it’s been a wonderful relationship. The Gladstone has been nothing but great to us, and they’ve given us a terrific deal on an awesome space each month. Unfortunately, long story short, they’re no longer in a position to do so, which is why we’re heading out into the world with a list of potential new venues and no hard feelings.

It’s an awful lot to do, but it’s also a great opportunity to redefine a series that we’ve been running for nearly five years now. In the meantime, we’ve got two more readings coming up at the Art Bar before the year is through, and we’re going to do them right. Stay tuned for details.
