The moment of truth for the billboard tax

Toronto’s City Council is reportedly set to debate its new Sign By-Law and Tax tomorrow from 9:30 AM onward. “We’d love for you to join us at City Hall,” Jonathan Goldsbie of the Toronto Public Space Committee said in a mass mailing earlier today. “We’ll be the ones who aren’t the army of lobbyists, and we’re pretty easy to distinguish.”

Goldsbie’s email contains links to a profile of relevant lobbyists courtesy of Spacing, a fact sheet produced by BeautifulCity.ca, and photos of some gunk brought to you by IllegalSigns.ca

Most importantly, the note contains a reminder that if you care about this issue, and you’d like to contact your councillor, it’s not too late to do so. But if you’re free tomorrow morning, head on down to City Hall and be a part of the action. It might just be a chance to witness a genuine grassroots victory.

But, realistically, who is free on a weekday morning in early December? I’d like to go, but I got a little thing called work in the way. I wish my hours weren’t so rigid, but I guess that’s the nature of the beast, eh?
