Something to think about

“There’s plenty of room inside the train!” the woman standing next to me on the platform shouted. “Why don’t you all move in and let a few more people on?”

Have you guessed why they didn’t move in? I’ll give you a hint: when a beligerent woman tells an already crowded group of people to inconvenience themselves further for the sake of letting her spend a few minutes in close quarters with them – and they have the power not to make that happen simply by doing nothing – their bodies are bound to turn to stone.

In fact, as the subway doors shut, I swear I saw one of the passengers inside flash a look that could only be called a blend of smug satisfaction and pity for the rest of us left behind. Don’t yell at your fellow commuters, everybody.

Also, why don’t you all move in and let a few more people on, everybody?

Normally I’d agree, but there really wasn’t a whole lot of room in this case. I mean, unless this lady was seeing a bunch of room I’d somehow missed.

Also, and I didn’t want to point this out because it unfairly characterizes the woman in the story, but there was an especially awkward moment seconds before that, after the woman in question had shoved herself to the front of a whole mass of people, myself included, who were happy to wait for the next train. She tried to get on, and the woman next to me politely said “There’s no room.”

But then another woman at the front of the crowd changed her mind and successfully squeezed herself into a small opening. The loud lady didn’t like that at all, and she shot everyone around her a look that said “Yeah, right, no room!”

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I definitely spent a moment trying and failing to come up with a polite way to say “Yeah, lady, but you could fit two of that tiny woman into the space you’d occupy.”
