The assassination of a slow news day by the baby Robert Ford
Yesterday, a post in the blog section of the Toronto Star website noted that actor Owen Wilson has named his newborn son Rob Ford. Well, Robert Ford Wilson, but still.
Did Wilson name his kid after our mayor? In all likelihood, has he ever even heard of our mayor? Is the fact that we’re even talking about this a symptom of our city’s desperate craving for the world’s attention? The answer to one of those questions is “yes,” and I’ll leave it up to you to decide which one.
Author David Rider, whose blog is full of much more substantial material, doesn’t actually come right out and say that this isn’t news. He does, however, admit that there is “no reliable hint of a link” between the two names.
However, David argues, “Wilson’s pick is très traditional for show business, where unusual offspring monikers include Apple, Audio Science, Hopper, Pilot Inspector and Sosie.” Which is circular reasoning, because there’s absolutely nothing “unusual” about the name Robert Ford Wilson, unless you assume it’s a tribute to some Canadian city’s new mayor. Otherwise, it’s an utterly “usual” name.
Anyway, jokes about gravy trains and bottle rockets. Also, I’ll admit that I would like to see someone at ET Canada ask Wilson how he chose the name, just so I can put ten bucks on him answering the question by shrugging, squinting, and saying “Gotta give your kid a name, bro.”

I love my son’s name, but I wish I had thought of Audio Science earlier. Oh well, maybe next time.
Is it more of a boy’s name or a girl’s name?
Evidently, it’s a boy’s name. And a very unlucky boy at that.
