Two weeks and counting without a drink

If you’ve been following me on Twitter, you may have noticed I’ve been wrapping up each day lately by noting how long it’s been since I’ve had a drink. Last night, I hit the two-week mark.

No, I haven’t joined AA, and I haven’t had some recent personal disaster that’s prompted me to change my woeful ways, or anything like that. I just decided to try and cut drinking out of my routine – not for good, but for now – and so far it’s been going rather well.

Not that there haven’t been some obstacles. I’ll admit that I probably could have chosen a better time to do this than the first weeks of summer. You have to drop certain habits and routines when you make a significant change like this, and it’s definitely had a bit of a ripple effect in terms of where I hang out, what I do after work, and so on.

Tonight, for example, might be a bit of a challenge. Everyone’s a DJ returns to Disgraceland tonight, and it’ll be the first full night I’ve been able to attend in Toronto since March, so I’m really looking forward to it. But it’s also a night where I traditionally get paid in booze, so I’m expecting I’ll have to turn down a few drinks.

Not that I’m complaining. When the alternative is doing a better set, hosting a better night, and generally feeling more alert and energetic, it’s hard to feel like dodging drinks for a while isn’t actually a pretty great idea.

You don’t call hitting a little girl with your car a personal disaster? I know it’s her problem more than yours, but you still had to stay up all night scrubbing blood and hair off your bumper. I’d call that at least an inconvenience.

I really didn’t expect a resolution of mine to bring out the worst in you.

    That’s surprising.
