Doing one thing well

You know how they always say that the secret to succeeding in life is to do one thing and do it well? It’s a very nice idea, and one that makes a lot of sense. But I hope it’s not the only way to lead a good life, because I don’t think I’ve ever been very good at it.

Sure, I’m pretty good at doing a bunch of different things and doing them fairly well. You might even say I’m really good at doing too many things at once and doing them in harried, dizzying anonymity. But doing one thing and doing it well? That just seems like a choice to give up a lot of great opportunities and ignore a lot of what life has to offer.

This year, I’m going to try doing fewer things, and I’m going to look for ways to do them better. But for now, I think that’s about it.
