It’s Friday, so here’s the video for “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” by Saint Etienne
“In case you haven’t made your selection yet,” my friend Rishi asked me in an email last night, “may I make a nomination?”
In this case, he definitely can. I’m very much a fan of the Saint Etienne version of this song; it’s a departure from the Neil Young original, to say the least, but it stands on its own two feet as a great track. It’s dropped in an out of my sets for years, and it never fails to strike the right chord.
The video is… Well, let’s say it’s “of its time.” But it’s a good one, and worth starting off the day with. Thanks for the recommendation, Rishi!

Such a simple production, too. And that keening background keyboard bleeds out like a horde of singing cicadas on a summer’s day. Love love love. Good post!
Heh… Again, thank Rishi. This was his good call.
Thanks Matt!
Hey, thank you. This worked out well. So well, in fact, that I think I’d better just keep my ears open to suggestions from people for future posts. I can’t promise I’ll agree with all of them, but I’ll certainly welcome them!
I’d never actually seen the video for this song till just now. Embarrassingly, I didn’t know this was a Neil Young song till relatively recently.
