Here’s an example of what tonight’s live recordings will sound like

Yesterday I mentioned that tonight, at Everyone’s a DJ, we’re going to try recording the sets live off the mixer. In order to make sure I could keep that promise, I hooked up the gear and recorded a brief set of my own this afternoon. It’s yours to download in MP3 format.

I recorded this set using an Edirol R-09HR hooked into the recording jacks of a Stanton M.505 mixer, which is the same setup we’ll use at the club. The set was recorded directly to an MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; we obviously have the option of recording at a higher quality, but I’ll have to run some tests before I can figure out just how high we can go with an almost six hour file on a single memory card. I spun CDs – instead of MP3s, burned discs or vinyl – in order to ensure the quality of the source signal.

All I’ve done to edit the original recording is trim the edges and maximize the volume. There’s no compression, so you’ll hear a few peaks and valleys in the volume. I’m certainly open to suggestions when it comes to making these recordings as good as they can be, so do check it out and drop me a line with your thoughts.
