The stunning and tragic reason why Liberal MP Scott Simms will vote to save the gun registry tonight

I think it would best if were to link to this story in the Toronto Star without comment, simply to let it speak for itself without running the risk of cheapening it. The vote to determine the fate of the long gun registry will be held in the House of Commons tonight.

This is indeed a sad and tragic story, and I can certainly sympathize with Mr. Simms as he goes through this. It’s not immediately clear how the registry prevents suicides, though. In fact, a common argument for the registry is it deters gun owners from irresponsible acts or illegal resale, and encourages them to be legal and safe with any weapon registered to them. A suicidal person is unlikely to share these motivations. The only rationale I can think of is to assist in locating a hidden gun in the possession of someone who is a perceived danger to themselves, but that will not always be known. If it was, the person’s licence to possess a weapon would already be revoked.
