Haircuts aren’t supposed to hurt, right?

At the risk of navel-gazing, I went out and got a haircut last night. I hadn’t gotten one since weeks before the wedding, and that haircut wasn’t done by my usual guy. So for lack of a better word, last night’s haircut was a bit of a reunion.

And as much as I hate to say it, I think I’m in the market for a new barber. I walked away looking good enough, but damned if I didn’t have to pay for it.

Barbers and hairdressers deal in volume, and I can understand the importance of getting the job done quickly. But gradually, over the past few months, my barber’s been developing this new style based on whipping the scissors and clippers around your head as quickly as possible, tugging and tearing at the hairs he’s cutting in the process. It gets the job done fast, and it’s extraordinarily painful.

I guess I never noticed it before, because he’d been building up to it gradually. But when you go away for a couple of months, and then you come back to that sort of thing, you can really feel the difference. And then, when your wife asks you how you got that great big cut on the back of your neck, you realize it’s time to make a change.

So yeah, it looks like I’m on the hunt for a new barber. As always, your suggestions are more than welcome.
