It’s Friday, so here’s the video for “The Sweater” by Meryn Cadell

This is a blast from the past, although depending on where you’re from and how old you are, it might be completely new to you. It’s definitely not the sort of track that you would have expected to become a hit, but it did; there was a period back in the early nineties when it was ubiquitous among certain music stations and their audiences.

But “retro” as it was at the time, it maintains a timeless sort of feel. It was offbeat, literate, and independent enough to appeal to young girls and guys alike in the rise of the grunge era, so the timing was definitely right. But if Meryn Cadell were to have released some variation of this song today, I think it still would have found an audience.

Not on MuchMusic, of course, because they hardly play any videos anymore, and they’re trying to play even less of them. But really, what kind of kid who’s into this sort of music turns to Much these days?

Cadell continued to record throughout the nineties, never quite repeating the success of “The Sweater,” but doing some solid work in collaboration with some very talented people. He is now living as a man, and teaching in the creative writing program at UBC.

Awesome! That’s one of those things that I’ve totally forgotten about, but the words are still lodged somewhere in my brain. Scary how much useless info your brain retains!
